SMA‑RTY demonstrates ship-to-ship 5G between naval units

Operational testing with the Italian Navy at OPEX TASK 2-25

SMA‑RTY has successfully participated in OPEX TASK 2‑25, the latest operational experimentation of the Italian Navy, building on the first phase held in La Spezia. In collaboration with SITEP, acting as system integrator for the Navy, SMA‑RTY contributed as a technological partner for 5G to key tests focused on naval communications and inter-platform coordination.

Ship-to-ship 5G radio link performance and setup

During OPEX TASK 2-25, SMA-RTY established a private 5G ship-to-ship network using a dedicated cell and directional antennas on two moving naval units. Over four days at sea, multiple sessions of 5G-based communication and real-time video streaming were carried out between the two vessels over long distances. The trial validated the stability and reliability of the link under operational maritime conditions, even with challenges such as motion, interference, and signal degradation.

Future multidomain private 5G applications

While the exercise focused on ship-to-ship communication, the results provide an important step toward future multidomain applications, where secure and real-time connectivity is essential across naval, aerial, and land platforms. SMA‑RTY’s participation demonstrates its commitment to developing modular private 5G networks for advanced naval operations.
