MTCOM: 5G connectivity for autonomous drones enhancing port safety
Over 2,000 maritime incidents annually, 50% inside ports.
5G Surveillance for Smarter Ports
Marine Terrestrial 5G Communications for Autonomous Drones (MTCOM), introduces a real-time maritime monitoring system that combines 5G connectivity with autonomous surface drones to improve safety, environmental control, and port operations.

Connectivity Infrastructure
MTCOM deploys a private 5G network with three interconnected cells, providing low-latency, reliable coverage across the Gulf of La Spezia. This setup enables autonomous drones to operate in real time, exchanging data and supporting safe, efficient port monitoring.
Preliminary tests in the Gulf
During the Italian Navy’s OPEX exercise, SMA-RTY tested its NGCI 5G solution in real maritime conditions. Even with a low-mounted antenna, coverage remained stable across most of the gulf, demonstrating the system’s reliability and supporting the next phase of MTCOM’s network expansion.

What we aim to achieve
traffic optimization
Real-time monitoring improves vessel flow, reduces congestion, and increases port operational efficiency.
incident management
Detects and responds to risks, preventing accidents and coordinating interventions
environmental monitoring
Monitors coastal infrastructure and marine conditions to protect ecosystems and prevent hazards.
