On October 1, SMA-RTY and Hydronet hosted a joint session ”The Communication in the Multi-Domain Era” examining how rapidly evolving maritime environments increasingly rely on interconnected, adaptive communication ecosystems.
Luca Maggiani and Hydronet CEO Tommaso Melodia outlined a model where private 5G, underwater acoustic systems, and surface platforms operate as components of a single information layer. In this architecture, every asset—whether submerged, on the surface, or on land—can exchange data with minimal latency and without losing context.

The session highlighted how modern missions require more than isolated links. They demand networks capable of dynamically routing information across domains, maintaining secure C2 channels, and ensuring real-time situational awareness even when assets move or conditions change.
The discussion resonated strongly with the audience, reflecting the growing relevance of multi-domain communication for defense operations, port security, environmental monitoring, and autonomous system coordination.

During Seafuture, SMA-RTY also collaborated with Carlo Augusto Grazia, Tenure Track Assistant Professor at UNIMORE, and his team on a hands-on demonstration focused on drone connectivity.
The objective was to test whether combining two distinct channels (private 5G and V2X at 5.9 GHz) could provide a more resilient link for both control signals and video transmission. Because these technologies operate in separate frequency domains, they can be used simultaneously without interference, allowing each channel to deliver its full bandwidth.

In the demonstration, the system streamed video at 4–5 Mbps while the 5G link handled control, showing how separating the two flows increases robustness and maintains responsiveness. This approach opens promising opportunities for future scenarios requiring precise navigation and uninterrupted tracking.

The collaboration will continue within the MARPA project, with upcoming tests at the Autodromo di Marzaglia. These experiments will explore high-speed communications, dynamic beamforming, and real-time, vision-assisted localization to support automotive digital twin research and other safety-critical applications.

The final day saw SMA-RTY featured on TGR Liguria, where the company presented MTCOM—Marine Terrestrial 5G Communications for Autonomous Drones—a project supported by Regione Liguria and focused on coastal monitoring using USVs and NGCI connectivity.

Participating in Seafuture 2025 offered SMA-RTY the chance to share progress, compare perspectives, and meet partners working toward the same objectives. The event reinforced how multi-domain communication is becoming a central element for maritime operations, from security to environmental monitoring.

As this edition concludes, SMA-RTY leaves La Spezia with new insights and strengthened collaborations, looking ahead to the next steps in building resilient communication solutions for the maritime sector.

Seafuture 2025 closed yesterday at the Naval Base of La Spezia after four days dedicated to maritime technologies, defense innovation, and international collaboration. From September 29 to October 2, the event gathered more than 350 companies from 90 countries, confirming its role as a key meeting point for the sector.

This year, SMA-RTY joined the exhibition together with Hydronet, presenting how multi-domain communication can connect underwater, surface, and terrestrial systems in a unified and resilient architecture. Their shared space at Stand DOCK-S/S2 welcomed institutions, specialists, and delegations interested in the evolution of maritime connectivity. On the opening day, Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto also visited the stand, offering an opportunity to discuss how advanced communication systems can support operational needs at sea.

Speakers emphasized the importance of technological sovereignty, resilience, and collaboration between industry and defense. For SMA-RTY, the session reinforced the role of communication infrastructure as a strategic asset for securing maritime and underwater domains.
