One Year with the REMAIN Project: SMA-RTY's Impact and Progress

As SMA-RTY celebrates its first anniversary as part of the REMAIN project, we reflect on a year of advancements and collaboration aimed at revolutionizing remanufacturing processes in the SUDOE region. This European initiative focuses on integrating remanufacturing practices into the industrial model, addressing the growing challenges of waste and sustainability in traditional manufacturing sectors.

Our Main Objective

At the core of SMA-RTY's involvement in REMAIN is the development of multispectral perception system known as the "meta-camera". Our mission is to enhance the perception capabilities for remanufacturing solutions, with a focus on products like footwear and other industrial goods. By leveraging Near-Infrared (NIR), Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR), and Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) imaging, SMA-RTY is paving the way for more sustainable and efficient manufacturing processes.

Key Contributions and Achievements

In the past year, SMA-RTY has made significant strides in both GT1 (Damage Identification) and GT2 (Tool Development for Remanufacturing). SMA-RTY contributed to the task of analysis and classification of damages on used products. We are currently advancing to develop innovative methodologies for automatic defect detection and classification using cutting-edge imaging and AI technologies.

Significant progress has also been made in the development of the meta-camera, with key milestones achieved in SWIR modality validation and integration, resulting in image quality improvements. Our efforts are now targetted towards 3D perception through the integration of Time of Flight (ToF) sensors.

The Power of Collaboration

As part of the REMAIN consortium, SMA-RTY collaborates with leading institutions and companies across France, Spain, and Portugal led by the INESCOP. This transnational partnership combines expertise in robotics, AI, and manufacturing, ensuring solutions are adaptable to varied industries and regions within the SUDOE space. Looking ahead, SMA-RTY is excited to continue refining the meta-camera and its applications, while contributing to the development of a global demonstrator for damage detection and remanufacturing.
